Primo compleanno - First birthday

Tanti auguri Arnau!

Ed eccoci qui a festeggiare il primo compleanno del campione, dopo mesi di continui miglioramenti.

Da quando abbiamo avuto il via libera dei medici, Arnau non ha smesso di esplorare il mondo e di fare nuove esperienze: è stato già due volte in Italia, ha preso i suoi primi aerei, è stato a Parigi e in giro per la Francia in macchina, ha provato le sue prime giostre a Eurodisney, è stato sui Pirenei a 2000 metri di altitudine, ha sguazzato in piscine in giro per mondo, i primi bagni al mare e la spiaggia, feste, matrimoni, il suo battesimo,...

Nel frattempo, anche grazie alle continue sessioni di fisioterapia e stimolazione, ha imparato a muovere sempre meglio le gambe, a sedersi, a gattonare, a mettersi in piedi e fare i primi passi.

E gli è venuto un caratterino niente male, forse un modo per difendersi dal fratellone e dire sempre la sua.

Happy birthday Arnay!

And here we are, celebrating the first year of our little champion, after months of ongoing improvements.

After getting the go-ahead from the doctors, Arnau has not stopped exploring the world and making new experiences: he's been twice to Italy, he took his first flights, he's been to Paris and around France by car, he's tried his first rides at Eurodisney, he's been on the Pyrenees at 2000 meters of altitude, he's enjoyed swimming pools around the world, beaches and waves in the Mediterranee, parties, weddings, his own baptism...

Meanwhile, also thanks to the ongoing physiotherapy and stimulation sessions, he's learnt to move his legs better and better, to sit, to crawl, to stand and make the first few steps.

And he put up a pretty strong character, maybe as a way to defend himself from his big brother and have his own way.

Festeggiando 6 mesi (e 8 chili!) - Celebrating 6 months (and 8kg!)

6 mesi per il piccolo grande Arnau, che continua a migliorare e a crescere come un campione (ha appena passato gli 8 chili).
Auguri!
Niente di meglio che festeggiarlo con la prima domenica mattina in spiaggia della stagione.
Cielo azzurro, un sole fantastico, ancora non troppo caldo, mare freschino ma pronto per i bagni... Arnau ha apprezzato l'esperienza spiaggia da sotto l'ombrellone e giocato con i piedini nella sabbia.
Un saluto a tutti e un paio di foto recenti del piccolo Arnau, una con il fratellone Luca in un tranquillo sabato mattina in camera, e una in giro per il mondo.

6 months for our little Arnau, who keeps improving and getting bigger by the day (just passed the 8kg mark).
Congratulations!
Nothing better than celebrating with our first Sunday morning at the beach of the season.
Blue sky, a fantastic sun shining, not to hot yet. Water chilly but not too bad to start swimming and playing with the waves. Arnau really enjoyed the new beach experience under the big umbrella, playing with the sand with his little feet.

Quasi 5 mesi ... Almost 5 months

Arnau ha quasi 5 mesi e se potesse parlare direbbe che continua a migliorare, che faceva freddo durante la risonanza magnetica la settimana scorsa e avrebbe volentieri evitato l'anestesia ma che é contento che il risultato sia positivo, che sta imparando a conoscere un sacco di giochi nuovi, che si diverte col suo fratellone e che non vede l'ora di andare a fare una mini vacanza per Pasqua.

Arnau is almost 5 months old and if he could talk, he'd tell you that he keeps improving, that the MRI last week was very cold and he would have gladly skipped another anesthetic but he is happy that the results were positive, that he's learning to play with lots of new toys, that he enjoys being around his big brother and that he's looking forward to a mini vacation for Easter.

E bravo Arnau! - Good job Arnau!

Settimana intensa, 4 medici (due neurologi, un oftalmologo, un pediatra), di cui 3 nuovi per Arnau... e tutti e 4 positivamente stupiti dalle sue ottime condizioni.
La neurologa quasi non credeva alla cartella clinica e a tutto ció che le raccontavamo della brutta avventura di Arnau, vedendolo in cosí buona forma: rideva, faceva suoni, manteva l'attenzione a lungo, seguiva oggetti perfettamente, manteva lo sguardo, seguiva suoni, reggeva la testa in varie posizioni, ... tutto benissimo!
Continuiamo cosí!
Ah, dimenticavamo... nel frattempo Arnau ha raggiunto i 6 chili.
Eccolo qui.

Intense week, 4 doctors (2 neurologists, 1 ophtalmologist, 1 pediatrician), 3 of them seeing Arnau for the first time... and all four of them positively surprised by his excellent conditions.
The neurologist could not believe that Arnau went through all that, considering how well he was behaving: he smiled, made noises, kept his attention for long periods of time, perfectly followed moving objects and sounds, kept his head straight in many positions... everything perfect!
Let's keep improving like that!
BTW, we were almost forgetting... Arnau is now more than 6kg.

Muy buenas noticias. Very good news.

Estamos muy contentos. Muy pero que muy contentos. Ya veíamos que Arnau iba bien, mejoraba mucho... pero esta semana hemos tenido confirmación: Arnau ve perfectamente!
Por la lesión y la situación de la hemorragia, podría haber afectado a la vista... pues después de la visita con la oftalmólogo, todo está bien e incluso nos han dado el alta de oftalmología!! Perfecto, una cosa menos ;-)

We are happy, really really happy. We notice that Arnau was getting better and that he could see... but we got the confirmation: Arnau is OK!
He could have bad sight because of the blood situation... but everything is OK!
Perfect! We won't have to worry about it!

Terzo complimese! Three-month birthday today!

Terzo mese oggi per Arnau. Auguri!
Senza grandi festeggiamenti, ma un giorno intenso, a cominciare dalla sessione di stimulazione (una sessione iniziata con grande energia ed entusiasmo, per poi passare a esercizi piú difficili che hanno fatto arrabbiare Arnau.. alla fine, pace con l'istruttrice e un arrivederci alla prossima settimana).
Domani prima visita con il neurologo del centro di stimulazione, e giovedí visita oculistica per vedere un po' piú scientificamente se ci sono possibili problemi alla vista, al campo visuale, etc...
Per ora, buona notte Arnau (eh sí, dorme giá tra 6 e 7 ore di seguito, anche se continua 100% col latte della mamma).

Third month for Arnau today. Happy 3-month birthday!
No big party today, but an intense day, which started with a stimulation session (a good session today, with lots of energy and enthusiam in the first part, followed by some tough exercise which upset our little Arnau... at the end, reconciliation with the instructor and a good bye to next week).
Tomorrow, first visit with the neurologist, then on Thursday visit to the ophthalmologist to get some more scientific data on potential vision issues.
For now, good night to Arnau, who's now sleeping up to 6-7 hours straight, even if he continues to eat 100% maternal milk.

Qualche settimana dopo... A few weeks later...

Rieccoci!

Sono passate ormai 3 settimane dell'ultimo update e tutto prosegue bene.
Arnau continua ad imparare un sacco di cose e a migliorare. Segue sempre meglio oggetti e persone, anche senza l'aiuto di suoni. Riesce a comunicare molto bene con sorrisi e suoni, quando é rilassato.
Riesce a rimanere concentrato per lunghi periodi.

Arnau pesa giá 5.7kg!

Anche noi genitori continuiamo ad imparare trucchi del mestiere ed esercizi da fare poi a casa, accompagnando Arnau una volta alla settimana a un centro di stimulazione. Le ultime due sessioni sono state perfette, Arnau era riposato e molto sveglio ed ha interagito con l'istruttrice per quasi tutta la sessione.

Here we are again!

Three weeks have passed since the last update and everything is going well.
Arnau keeps learning a lot of things and is constantly improving.
He's getting better and better at following objects and faces, even without the help of sounds. He can communicate quite well with smiles and sounds, especially when he's relaxed.
His attention span is quite good.

Arnau is now already 5.7kg!

We also, as parents, keep learning many tricks of the trade and exercises that we can do at home, by taking Arnau once a week in a center specialized in development and stimulation for young kids.
The last 2 sessions were perfect, Arnau was awake and relaxed and he interacted with the instructor for almost the entire session.

Miglioramenti continui - Ongoing improvements

Ormai a casa da piú di 3 settimane, Arnau continua a migliorare.
Riesce a rilassarsi sempre di piú e per lunghi periodi di tempo (appena arrivati a casa era molto rigido) e inizia a interagire, segue suoni e oggetti con gli occhi, inizia a ridere, prova a comunicare.
Un pediatra nuovo che l'ha visitato pochi giorni fa ha detto che se non gli avessimo raccontato la storia e non avesse visto la cicatrice, non si sarebbe accorto di niente.
Continuano le speranze..

Nel frattempo, vita tranquilla ma quasi normale per Arnau.
Ha fatto i primi vaccini.
Gli piace un sacco fare il bagnetto.
Gli stanno ricrescendo i capelli: vedremo presto l'opera d'arte dei capelli un po' piú lunghi attorno alla cicatrice.

It's been over 3 weeks that Arnau has been back at home and he keeps improving.
He has managed to relax a lot more and for good periods of time (a big chance since the first days at home) and he's starting to interact: he follows sounds and objects with his eyes, he's starting to smile, he's trying to communicate.
A new prediatrician who saw him a few days ago said that if we had not told him anything and he had not seen the scar, he would not have noticed anything special.
We continue to hope...

In the meantime, a quiet but almost normal life for Arnau.
He's got his first vaccines.
He loves taking baths.
His hair is growing again: we'll soon see masterpiece of some longer hair around the scar.

Controlli medici ok - Medical checks ok

Oggi era giorno di esami e controlli all'ospedale.
Esami del sangue, ecografia cerebrale, visita con la neurochirurga.
I risultati piú dettagliati si avranno fra un po', ma l'ecografia conferma che l'ematoma continua ad assorbirsi: bene!

Per la prima volta ci hanno fatto vedere le immagini dei primi giorni, comparate con quelle attuali: la quantitá di sangue dell'ematoma era enorme e i ventricoli celebrali super gonfi.
Rimane ancora sangue, ma molto meno, e i ventricoli sono adesso della dimensione corretta per un bambino di questa etá.

Avreste dovuto vedere la faccia della neurochirurga quando alla fine della visita ho chiesto se i cambi di pressione avrebbero potuto essere un problema per Arnau, in particolare bassa pressione (non potevo nascondere che avevo in mente montagna o aerei).
Mi ha lanciato uno sguardo serio, chiedendomi se stavo scherzando: il bimbo non va da nessuna parte, a casa, riposo e tranquillitá!
Ok, ok, vorrá dire che rimanderemo qualsiasi idea di weekend in montagna a quest'estate o al prossimo inverno.
E definitivamente niente voli per il momento...

Today it was about exams and medical checks at the hospital.
Blood tests, ultrasound brain scans, and a visit with the neurosurgeon.
More detailed results will come only later on, but the ultrasound showed the ongoing improvements: the hematoma continues to re-absorb, good!

For the first time, they showed us the images from the first days back in early December compared to today's situation.
There's definitely still blood around, but nothing compared to the huge hematoma of the early days: that was scary. And the brain ventricles went back to a normal size for a baby of Arnau's age.

You should have seen the reaction of the neurosurgeon when, at the end, I've asked her if changes in air pressure would have been an issue for Arnau, in particular low pressure (I could not hide that I was thinking of mountains and planes).
She stared a me, very serious, and asked if I was joking: the baby goes nowhere, he's got to rest at home!
Ok, ok, that means we'll postpone any idea of a weekend on the mountains to the summer or winter next year.
And definitely no flights for the time being...

5 chili e i primi sorrisi - 5kg and the first smiles

Oggi Arnau ha raggiunto i 5 chili!
Un'altra piccola conquista.
Fisicamente, ha recuperato come un campione.

E inizia a fare i primi sorrisi, e a seguire con gli occhi, in maniera piú precisa, i nostri spostamenti.
Il tutto ci fa ben sperare per la vista.
Non possiamo dimenticare che la vista é una delle cose a rischio, quando si tratta di pressione o danni nella parte posteriore del cervello, dunque ogni minimo segnale positivo é benvenuto.
Tra qualche settimana avremo la visita con l'oftalmologo per un controllo piú dettagliato e ne sapremo di piú.

Today Arnau got to 5kg!
Another milestone.
From a physical perspective, he's recovered like a champion.

And he started to smile, and to follow more consistently our movements with his eyes.
That's giving us good hopes for his eye sight.
We can't forget that vision is one of the things at risk, when dealing with high pressure or brain damage in the back area of the brain, so every little positive sign is very much welcome.
In a few weeks, we'll see an ophthalmologist and we'll know more.

Via gli ultimi punti - The last stiches are gone

A inizio settimana abbiamo fatto la prima visita di controllo in ospedale, con la neurochirurga che sta seguendo Arnau.
Gli sono stati tolti gli ultimi punti.
Ne rimanevano una manciata, in 3 zone diverse.
Tutto bene, la ferita é ormai cicatrizzata e Arnau puó iniziare a godersi i primi bagnetti senza troppa paura di bagnare la ferita.

L'altra buona notizia é che la pressione intracranica continua ad essere corretta e non é aumentata.
Il rischio é che l'ematoma, che poco a poco continua a riassorbirsi, possa in alcune zone ridurre il flusso del liquido cerebro spinale, causando un aumento della pressione in uno dei ventricoli cerebrali.
Per ora tutto bene e, piú tempo passa senza complicazioni, minore é la probabilitá che accada.
Ne sapremo di piú tra una settimana, quando Arnau fará un controllo piú esaustivo.

Altra prioritá in queste settimane: iniziare il prima possibile gli esercizi di stimulazione.
C'é un centro medico specializzato a soli 10 minuti da casa nostra.
Iniziamo a batterci con le liste di attesa, ma la prioritá in bimbi cosí piccoli é piú alta, dunque abbiamo buone speranze.

Earlier this week, we had the first check back at the hospital, with the neurosurgeon following Arnau's case.
The last stiches have finally been removed.
There were a handful left, in 3 different areas: all gone now.
The wound has now nicely healed, and Arnau can enjoy his first baths without worrying too much about getting some water on the wound.

The other piece of good news is that the intracranial pressure looks about right and is not increasing.
The risk is that the hematoma, which continues to slowly absorb, could in some areas reduce the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid, thus causing increased pressure in one of the brain ventricles.
So far so good. And the longer the period of time without this type of complications, the less likely to happen in the future.
We'll know more in a week, when we'll go back for a more in-depth check, with ultrasound scans.

Another priority these days: start the stimulation exercises as soon as possible.
There's a specialized medical center just 10 minutes from where we live.
We're starting the fight with waiting lists, but newborns tend to have higher priority, so we are hopeful.

Prima settimana a casa - First week at home

E' da poco piú di una settimana che Arnau é tornato a casa.
Sono stati giorni di adattamento.
Per tutti quanti, ma soprattutto per Arnau.
Sembra strano, ma una delle cose a cui si devono abituare i bimbi che hanno passato settimane o mesi in cure intensive é l'assenza di rumori e voci, soprattutto durante la notte.
In generale peró bene, Arnau continua a crescere ed é sempre piú attivo.

It's just over a week ago that Arnau got back home.
They've been adaptation days.
For all of us, but even more for Arnau.
It sounds weird, but one of the things that newborns who've spent weeks or months in intensive care have to adapt to is the lack of noise and voices, especially at night.
Overall, though, things are going well: Arnau keeps growing and everyday is more active.

Casa dolce casa! - Home sweet home!

Dopo un lungo mese in ospedale, quasi interamente nell'unitá di cure intensive per neonati, oggi Arnau é finalmente potuto tornare a casa!!!
Eccolo qui, pronto per lasciare l'ospedale e, poco dopo, dormendo come un re a casa.
Bentornato a casa!

After a long month in the hospital, almost entirely in the intensive care unit for newborns, today Arnau could finally go back home!!!
Here he is, ready to leave the hospital and, a bit later, enjoying his first nap at home.
Welcome back home!

 "Ma che bello questo cappellino. Hey, adesso peró datemi anche una giacca che io sono pronto ad andarmene!"

"What a nice hat. Now, please get me a jacket as well, that I'm ready to get out of here!"

"Aaah, questo sí che é dormire... niente piú squilli e allarmi, niente piú bimbi che strillano, niente piú infermiere che corrono su e giú. Casa dolce casa..."

"Aaahh, this is what I call sleeping... No more alarms, no more babies crying, no more nurses running right and left. Home sweet home..."

A casa domani? - At home tomorrow?

Non bisognerebbe dirlo troppo forte, ma se tutto va bene, Arnau potrá tornare a casa domani!!!
Ancora un paio di esami e di visite mediche e voila...
Non vediamo l'ora.
Anche Arnau sembra respirarlo nell'aria. Questa sera era in gran forma.

We shouldn't say that too loud, but if everything goes as planned, Arnau will be able to leave the hospital tomorrow!!!
A couple more exams and visits and we should be good to go...
We're looking forward to that.
